According to the latest available figures from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), of the 16.15 million people in New York aged 16 and over, only 12.08 million have driving licenses. The rest, or about a fourth of the state’s population who can legally drive, don’t have one.

If you’re part of the second group, are from New York City, and wish to enjoy the privileges of operating a motor vehicle, it’s time to apply for your NYC driving license.

So, how do you go about applying and getting one? The team at Pierre Paul Driving School is here to enlighten you by sharing NYC driving test tips and license application requirements, so read on.

Pick a Learner Permit Type

Before obtaining an NYC driving license, you must get a learner permit. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issues three kinds:

If you plan to travel by air within the U.S. or to Canada, consider getting a REAL ID permit. It’s a federally compliant DMV-issued learner permit. Starting May 2025, you’ll need it to board domestic flights and enter specific federal facilities unless you show a valid passport.

You can also opt for an Enhanced permit, which costs an additional $30. It’s similar to the REAL ID and lets you travel to Canada, Mexico, and certain Caribbean countries by land or sea.

Prepare Mandatory Documents for the Permit Application

Once you’ve decided which learner permit to get, gather the application requirements. Regardless of the type you wish to apply for, you’d need enough “points.”

If you only want a Standard permit, you must provide one proof of date of birth, one proof of residency, and six points for proof of name. To meet the required points, you can use your:

For the last two to be valid, your school must have issued them within a year of your permit application.

You need additional proofs and documents to apply for an enhanced or REAL ID permit. The NY DMV provides a complete requirement checklist.

Study for and Take the Permit Test

Passing the permit test (which you can take online or at a DMV office) is part of the New York license requirements for first-time drivers. It consists of questions from Chapters 4 to 11 of the New York State Driver’s Manual.

The Pierre Paul Driving School team has a 2024 permit test cheat sheet you can use as a review guide. However, you should still read and study the entire New York State Driver’s Manual to learn the basics of driving in the state. The NY DMV website has a copy you can access online, but you can also pick up a free copy at your nearest NYC DMV office.

Get Your Permit

Once you pass the permit test, you’ll get an email from the NY DMV. Here, you’ll find instructions about making NY DMV appointments. During your appointment, you’d need to:

Your actual permit should arrive by mail to your mailing address within two weeks. Also, note that if you’re under 18, your parent or guardian must accompany you to the DMV office to sign the paperwork.

Complete Your Pre-Licensing Requirements

Now that you have a learner permit, the next step is to undergo supervised driving practice. One of the best ways to achieve this pre-licensing requirement is to complete lessons at a licensed driving school in New York.

If you hold a Class D.J. learner permit (for those between 16 and 17 years old), you must acquire at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving. Your practice lessons must also include at least 15 hours of after-sunset driving.

You must also take and pass the Pre-Licensing Course, also called the 5-Hour Course or Class. Every new driver must satisfy this requirement before taking a DMV road test. The only exception is if they’ve completed a 48-hour Driver Education in NYC.

Pierre Paul Driving School is a licensed Brooklyn driving school. We offer supervised driving lessons and the required pre-licensing 5-Hour Class online. We also have packages that include road test scheduling, with some including the car for the road test.

Learn How to Pass the NYC Road Test

The road test is the final hurdle to getting your NYC driving license. Although it may only take 15 to 30 minutes, it can feel more than that if you’re anxious and nervous.

As KidsHealth.org explains, test anxiety can raise your chances of doing poorly on a test. It also points out that this problem is more likely to happen to those who haven’t prepared for their tests.

So, one of the best ways to pass your NYC road test (or any other exam, for that matter) is to prepare as much as you can by:

Also, as much as possible, get at least 50 hours of driving practice, even if you’re already 18 or older. The more driving experience you get, the more comfortable and confident you’ll feel driving during your road test.

Once you’re ready, schedule the test and then practice more the week before. Get enough sleep, especially the night before the big day. With these tips, you’re more likely to ace your test.
