Anyone aged 16 and above can take the New York DMV test, which is part of the process for getting a learner’s permit. You should expect 20 multiple-choice questions that test your knowledge of:
- Rules of the road
- Road signs
- Safe driving laws
To pass the DMV driving test’s knowledge portion, you need to provide correct answers to at least 14 questions, and this includes at least 2 of the 4 questions about road signs.
You will not pay extra fee, if you want to retake this DMV test. It is advisable that you make an online reservation at one of the counties with a bigger metro area.
After passing the NY learner permit test, you will receive the permit, which will be valid for 5 years. As a U.S. citizen, you may also apply for the enhanced learner permit that you can use instead of a passport to go to Mexico or Canada.
The following DMV driving test questions (and answers) will help you pass on your first try. After answering these questions, click the ‘see results’ button to see your score plus the correct answers for each question. We also email you the results so you can keep it for future reference.
As you prepare for the New York DMV permit test, start by going through these questions, study and also use the DMV app (it is free).
